Kirk Cousins, Wide Receivers Work Out With Jon Gruden In Florida
Kirk Cousins has worked out with Jon Gruden in the past, but he usually does so early in the offseason. With new receiving weapons, waiting was a smart move by Cousins.
Kirk Cousins has really made strides as a passer since becoming the Washington Redskins full-time starter in 2015. In two seasons, Cousins has posted over 9,000 passing yards with 54 touchdowns and just 23 interceptions. However, Cousins still has some room for growth, and he continues to pursue options to help him reach the next level.

Recently, Cousins and a group of his wide receivers went to work out with Jon Gruden in Florida. This is no surprise, considering that Jon is Redskins head coach Jay Gruden’s older brother. Cousins has worked with the elder Gruden in the past, and Jon is known for his ability to get the most out of quarterbacks.
This offseason was particularly important for Cousins to get in extra reps with his receivers. DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon have both left via free agency, and as a result, they will have some new players stepping into bigger roles. Namely, free agent acquisition Terrelle Pryor figures to be a top option with the team. Pryor was with Cousins during the workout, and getting together should help their chemistry out.

In addition to Pryor, second year player Josh Doctson and slot receiver Jamison Crowder were in attendance, per the Nicholas Tolisano of Redskins.com. Doctson’s presence is particular notable, as he missed almost all of last season as he battled an Achilles ailment.
However, he confirmed on Twitter that he is 100% as of Tuesday, so that should bode well for his future. He needs to factor into the passing game as a big, outside threat during his second season, and logging extra work with Cousins should give him a chance to do that.
As for Crowder, he is going to be in a unique situation for the 2017 season. He may be Cousins’ de facto No. 1 option to start the season since he has the most experience catching passes from the quarterback. Crowder should be ready to take on this role, but extra practice should give him more confidence moving forward.

At the end of the day, this training session is nothing out of the ordinary, but it is still good to see after what was a tumultuous offseason for the Redskins. If Cousins and the receivers can get off to a strong start in the 2017 NFL season, the Redskins offense should do very well. These types of events will allow them to build chemistry and that could really show down the line.
