Doug Williams should be considered as a Candidate for Redskins GM Position
Could Doug Williams emerge as a dark horse candidate for the Washington Redskins General Manager position?
According to reports, the Redskins face a daunting task in replacing former General Manager Scot McCloughan. No established executive should want the job and for good reason. Drama just seems to follow the franchise. It’s been a rough start to the off-season for the Redskins. First Washington lost Sean McVay, then the McCloughan drama escalated, and that’s not even mentioning Kirk Cousins contract controversy. Instead of looking outside the organization, the Redskins should promote Doug Williams to General Manager.
Elevating Williams would be an excellent example of winning off the field. Doug Williams has history with Bruce Allen as the two spent four years together in Tampa from 2004-08. In addition, to the past three seasons together in Washington. Currently a Senior Personnel Executive for the Redskins, Williams has nearly 40 years of collective experience as a player, scout, coach, and executive.
Doug Williams is most known for being the first African-American quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Now entering his 13th season has as a NFL executive, Williams was as a college scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-96. Williams was also a personnel executive (2004-08) and the director of pro scouting (2009-10) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had two head coaching stints at his Alma Mater Grambling State.
Doug Williams has the credentials to be General Manager for the Washington Redskins. Sashi Brown and John Lynch are GM’s in the NFL and neither has a resume better than Williams. After the way the Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder mishandled McCloughan’s firing, they should be proactive in repairing the image of the team. Naming Doug Williams GM would not only repair the franchise image, but it would represent a new chapter in Redskins history.
