Kirk Cousins signs one-year, $23.94 million contract
By Donny Starr
Reports are now surfacing that Washington Redskins Quarterback Kirk Cousins has signed the franchise tender, making him $23.94 million dollars richer.
Kirk Cousins has signed the deal, and the wheels keep rolling. The signing comes in the wake of turmoil in the Redskins front office. Earlier reports indicated Cousins approached owner Dan Snyder an asked to be traded. The signing doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee he will be back for the 2017 season. Cousins can now be traded, or he can play out the season and move on from the Redskins. However, Cousins could do just a well as he did last season and rake in a huge payday if he sticks around. Reports this week do not match with that theory.
But the question remains of what now? With July 15 still in the distance, the Redskins need to decide what the plan is for stability. If Cousins isn’t the guy, who will they build a team around?
Enter: Colt McCoy.
Alber Breer of MMQB thinks this may be the play the Redskins could run with:
"“Is the 30-year-old McCoy a 10-year answer for Washington at the position? No. But he can be what Cousins can’t be at this point, and that’s a bridge quarterback, which is why the question isn’t Cousins versus McCoy in a vacuum.”"
McCoy has shown some promise, but not enough to truly evaluate for a starting position. The Third-Round draft pick from Texas threw for 128 yards in 2015. However, he would be a way out of the Kirk Cousins saga. Cousins has yet to address his signing publicly. Needless to say, he’s probably going through the motions in hopes of being traded. Either way he’s $40 or so million dollars richer. If he plays his cards right, he can double that with or without the Redskins. More than likely, it will happen in a different jersey. It’s doubtful the Redskins will continue with him at the helm.
