The Washington Redskins tendered a couple of their exclusive rights free agents on Tuesday. They elected to bring back offensive tackles Ty Nsekhe and Vinston Painter for the 2017 season.

Prior to the 2016 season, Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan spoke highly of veteran tackle Ty Nsekhe. He called him a player that would start on half of the teams in the league, and was confident that he would serve as an excellent backup for the team. His confidence paid off, as Nsekhe played a big time part in one of the best four game stretches for the Redskins.

After Trent Williams was suspended for four games, Nsekhe took over as the left tackle and did an incredible job of mimicking Williams’ play. Though he was a 31-year-old that had barely played prior to that, Nsekhe established himself as a capable tackle who was sure to get interest on the free agent market.

However, the Redskins were lucky enough to have him as an exclusive right free agent. That meant that they were the only team that could negotiate with Nsekhe, provided that they wanted to retain him. Of course, the team did want to do that, and on Tuesday the placed a tender on Nsekhe, per Redskins.com’s Stephen Czarda. Now, Nsekhe will return to the Redskins to reprise his role as the best swing tackle in the league. This is a huge development for the team, as if he had been allowed to hit the open market, some team may have elected to sign him to a big deal, in hopes of having him lock down the left tackle spot for the next few years.

Elsewhere, the Redskins also placed a tender on their other backup tackle, Vinston Painter. Painter was added by the team from their practice squad midway through the season, and he did not see a lot of action. Still, he has strong athletic upside, and the Redskins elected to retain him as a project.

Essentially, the Redskins ensured that they will bring back all of their top offensive tackles by making this move. Their tackles were a strength for them last year, and the front office should be happy with their investments. These are low risk, high reward tenders and will likely pay off for the Redskins.
