The uncertainty around the future of Kirk Cousins is reaching a peak in Washington. The Redskins have to decide whether or not they want to keep him. If they do not, they may turn to Tony Romo as an answer.

If you told anybody that Kirk Cousins would be the subject of trade talks during his terrific midseason run for the Washington Redskins, people would have called you insane. At the time, it seemed like Cousins was establishing himself as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. However, he collapsed at the end of the season and the Redskins have been lukewarm about giving him a contract as a result.

Because of this, there have been quite a few rumors swirling about a potential Cousins trade. Earlier today, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah went on San Diego’s Mighty 1090 AM station to talk about the possibility of a Cousins trade. Regardless of whether or not Cousins is traded during the offseason, the long term outlook could be bleak for the Redskins, per Jeremiah:

"I don’t think they’re going to be able to get a long term deal done. I would say greater than 50 percent chance he’s not with the Redskins next year."

If this is true, then the Redskins are going to have to find a new quarterback. And perhaps they should trade Cousins to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 2 overall pick. If they do that, they will need a signal caller who can come in and help them win right away. That man may be Tony Romo.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, the Redskins would like to target a veteran quarterback if they were to trade Cousins. Romo could top their list, but Cole went on to say that any questions are “shrouded in whether Dallas is willing to trade or release him, and whether Romo will agree not to play for Washington as part of his release.” This could be a major issue, as the Cowboys likely do not want Romo to have a chance at beating them as a divisional rival.

That said, if the Cowboys view Romo as damaged goods due to his extensive injury history, then Romo could certainly end up in Washington. There are no guarantees that Romo will be the passer that he was, but he does offer a good deal of upside. It makes sense for the Redskins to have an interest in Romo, as that would buy them a year or so to get and groom a potential franchise quarterback.

At the end of the day, these are nothing more than rumors. If Cousins ends up on the 49ers, then targeting Romo would be a logical step for the Redskins. For now, they are just exploring all available avenues as they look to address their need at the most important position on their roster.
