According to sources close to Kirk Cousins, the quarterback does not want to be with the Washington Redskins. What does that mean for his future?

For the past couple of seasons, the Washington Redskins and Kirk Cousins have been engaged in contract talks. The two sides have each balked at a long term extension. The Redskins believe that Cousins has not proven himself enough to get a long term contract. Meanwhile, Cousins is trying to demand what he is worth on the market, which he believes to be in the $20-$25 million per year range. It seems unlikely that a long term deal will be agreed upon, and that has put some strain on their relationship.

According to reports, Cousins is not happy with the Redskins. Jason Reid of ESPN’s The Undefeated is saying that Cousins wants to get out of town:

Though Cousins may want to leave during this offseason, he does not really have control over everything because the Redskins will likely franchise him again. That will keep him in Washington for another year and make his market value questionable once again.

Still, if the relationship is on the rocks and may not be reparable, the Redskins would be best served trying to move on from Cousins. They should look to get top value for him now, given the dearth of quarterbacks that will be available in this year’s draft and across the league in free agency. The 2018 NFL Draft class is much stronger in terms of quarterbacks, so if the team wants to move on from Cousins, they should do it now and focus on taking a quarterback in next year’s draft.

In terms of suitors, the Redskins have one ideal team. The San Francisco 49ers. They just hired Kyle Shanahan, the Redskins offensive coordinator from 2010 to 2013, and he loves Cousins. In a series of tweets, Jason Reid talked about the connection between Shanahan and Cousins:

Shanahan obviously has a lot of faith in Cousins, and the 49ers need a quarterback. They could offer an enticing trade package centered around the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft to possibly lure Cousins away from the Redskins. In turn, the Redskins could focus on plugging their holes on defense early while either taking a Day 2 quarterback or signing a veteran. If the relationship between Cousins and the Redskins front office is that bad, that could end up being the best move for the team.
