Texans Defensive Shake-Up Bad News For Washington Redskins
As the Washington Redskins continue to search for their new defensive coordinator, the team got some bad news. The Houston Texans shook up their coaching staff, and they will retain Mike Vrabel as their new defensive coordinator.
Following the Houston Texans playoff loss to the New England Patriots, there were some excited about the potential of their assistants interviewing for coordinator positions. After all, the Texans had just come off of a season where they allowed the least yardage in the NFL, so they had a great season. One of the hot names was linebackers coach Mike Vrabel and there was some talk that he could interview with the Washington Redskins for their coordinator job.

However, the Texans and head coach Bill O’Brien made the decision to promote Vrabel to take over the defensive coordinator job in Houston. That put Romeo Crennel, one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, momentarily out of work. ESPN’s Adam Kaplan had reported that the Redskins would be interested in Crennel if he became available. O’Brien caught on to that and made another key move.
O’Brien gave Crennel a promotion and now Crennel will serve as the assistant head coach for the team. In all likelihood, he and Vrabel will run the defense together while Vrabel will hold the official title as coordinator. Crennel will continue to be an important part of the team while they are still able to retain their young, talented coach. Their defense should continue to be strong, and provided that they can retain A.J. Bouye, they should have a solid year in 2017.
For the Redskins, this is the worst news that could have come from Houston. Even if they did not end up hiring either Vrabel or Crennel, having them as options would have been huge to their defensive coordinator search. As of right now, the team has only interviewed mediocre retreads, and they really need to find some candidate that offers upside. Either Crennel or Vrabel would have done that.
