Despite a late scare against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Redskins were able to emerge victorious. The victory allowed the team to stay alive in the playoff race.

On the final drive of the game, it looked like the Eagles were driving. They got into the red zone and were threatening to score the winning touchdown against the Redskins. Then, Ryan Kerrigan got to Carson Wentz, sacking him to force a fumble. Trent Murphy recovered it and that gave the Redskins the 27-22 victory.

Most of the damage that the Redskins did was on offense. For most of the day, the top weapon for the Redskins was their passing game and Kirk Cousins. Cousins had yet another solid performance. Cousins went 14-of-21 for 234 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. He and was able to do a lot to help beat the Eagles. He was able to complete a lot of midrange passes on the sidelines today, and had excellent ball placement. Cousins found receivers when they were open and took advantage of the matchups that were in their favor.

On one occasion, he threw an 80 yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. Though the ball was slightly underthrown, he threw it at just the right time and took advantage of the favorable matchup against Leodis McKelvin. That play gave the Redskins some momentum on offense and really got their passing game going.

Still, Cousins had room for improvement. He endured a brutal pick six that should have never happened. He floated one outside to Jackson and McKelvin undercut the route. The ball had no pace on it, and it was a walk-in touchdown for McKelvin. Cousins needs to improve upon that in the future or he will cause the team problems.

On the ground, the Redskins were able to get some movement, and Robert Kelley made some nice runs. His best came on a 22-yard touchdown scamper. Kelley burst through the line and broke a few tackles on route to the end zone. He used his power to his advantage, and though his stats were not amazing, he was able to keep the Eagles honest. Kelley is certainly the best option at the running back position right now.

Unfortunately, the Redskins suffered a couple of key injuries on the defensive side of the ball as well. Stud rookie linebacker Su’a Cravens went down with a biceps injury early in the contest. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, some are fearing that he may have torn them. If that is the case, he could be forced to miss the rest of the season, which would greatly hurt their defensive efforts.

Elsewhere, Will Compton went down with a knee injury. The starting middle linebacker never returned. With the potential severity of Cravens’ injury, the Redskins need to hope that Compton can stay healthy. Otherwise, they will be very thin at the middle linebacker position. Because of these injuries, the defense had some issues, but it will be interesting to see what adjustments they make in the future.
