The story of the game was the improved play of Kirk Cousins. Cousins was phenomenal during the game, and he looked like a different player than he was in the first two games of the season. He ended up going 21-of-35 for 296 yards during the game. He threw for two touchdown passes and did not commit a turnover.
Cousins looked sharp on a lot of his passes, and one of his touchdowns was beautiful. He threw a laser to DeSean Jackson for a 33 yard score. Jackson was being covered by a defender but Cousins’ throw was in the perfect spot. He was able to thread the needle and got the team the points as a result.

A major improvement that the Redskins made in this game was to their play calling. On defense, they avoided using too much of a vanilla scheme. They had Josh Norman shadow Odell Beckham Jr., and they were able to limit the receiver as a result. The team also dealt with a few defensive injuries, including a likely torn ACL suffered by DeAngelo Hall, but they avoided making too many mistakes on that side of the ball.
On offense, there was one play call that demonstrated a more aggressive style of play calling. On a fourth down, the team elected to run a fake punt. Punter Tress Way fielded the ball and immediately lofted up a pass to Quinton Dunbar. Dunbar made a terrific jump ball catch to convert. It was just what energize the Redskins needed in the game, and it was crucial to the team’s success down the line.
Speaking of Dunbar, he made an unbelievable one handed interception during the game. The Giants were in the red zone at the time, but he snagged the pass one handed just before the goal line. The pass looked borderline uncatchable, but Dunbar made the play of the day by grabbing it.
The one negative for the Redskins was that they were ravaged by injuries during the contest. The team lost center Kory Lichtensteiger to a calf injury, Shawn Lauvao to an ankle injury, and Bashaud Breeland to an ankle injury. They need to hope those players are alright, especially after hearing that Hall is likely done for the season.
Overall, this was a huge win for the Redskins. It keeps them in the division race early, and they are really not too far back of first place. For all of their early season issues, they are still in position to have success this season.
