5. Carolina Panthers – Vernon Butler, DT

Vernon Butler is another player that I coveted for the Washington Redskins to take.  He has great size and offers the ability to be a force against the run and develop into a pass rusher too.  However, I don’t like this pick for the Carolina Panthers at all.

I’m certain that Vernon Butler was at the top of the Panthers draft board and that’s why they took him.  But I think the Panthers had much bigger needs than at defensive tackle.  Especially with two very good starters already at the position in Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short already emerging stars.

Vernon Butler will give the Panthers an excellent third defensive tackle for their rotation but what are they going to do to protect Cam Newton better?  They could have used an offensive tackle or how about a cornerback? With Josh Norman gone to the Redskins the Panther could have taken one instead of Butler.
