With Alfred Morris unlikely to be re-signed, the Redskins are going to need some extra bodies at running back in 2016. The common belief right now is that they’ll add a quality veteran like Arian Foster or Matt Forte during free agency, but their salary cap situation might not allow that. That’s why a low-profile player like Asiata might be a better fit for the Redskins’ current situation.

While Asiata might seem one-dimensional, he’s proven over the last couple of seasons to be a capable contributor in a number of ways. On top of being a tough, between-the-tackles runner, he’s a reliable pair of hands out of the backfield and an experienced pass blocker. And seeing how poorly Matt Jones performed in pass protection last season, he’d be a solid third-down option who can compliment Chris Thompson’s skill set.

Instead of spending millions of dollars on a brand-name running back, the Redskins can supplement Jones’ inconsistency with Asiata’s reliable, well-rounded skill set. The best part would be that the former Viking would likely cost less than $1 million annually to sign, which would be ideal for Washington’s financial situation.
