Alfred Morris Won’t Be Re-signed?

The Redskins are at a crossroads with their running game as we head into 2016. For the last few years, they’ve enjoyed the surprising success Morris has brought to them, but appear ready to head in a new direction. The former sixth-round pick is scheduled to hit the open market in March, but are the Redskins really ready to just let him take his talents elsewhere?

Why yes, yes they are. According to executive Bruce Allen, the Redskins have already decided that they’ll let Morris test free agency and likely won’t make any attempts to re-sign him after the market sets his value, even at a team-friendly price. It appears the team is ready to move forward with Matt Jones as their No. 1 back, although chances are they address his supporting cast in one way or another this offseason.

Suffice it to say that Morris will be an afterthought once free agency opens on March 9. It’s a disheartening thought for fans who fell in love with the underdog running back, but it seems to be a solid financial move for the Redskins. They need all of the money they can get to re-sign Kirk Cousins, which means that Morris will have the opportunity to prove his value for another franchise in 2016.
