This is the first of many situations where Griffin would have to understand that he’s a backup and nothing more. However, the Chiefs are in dire need of a No. 2, a situation that could appeal to a quarterback who probably believes he just needs another opportunity to prove he belongs in the NFL.

Alex Smith has proven to be an outstanding starter for the Chiefs, leading them to a dominant late-season run and playoff appearance. Despite a lack of elite weapons, he’s made the most of his time in Kansas City and has quieted anyone who called him a bust before his departure from San Francisco. There’s no unseating him at this moment, but injuries can happen at any time. Just ask Colin Kaepernick.

The Chiefs’ backup of 2015 was Chase Daniel, who is scheduled to hit the open market. Daniel is arguably one of the best backups in the NFL, and will likely have a number of potential suitors blowing up his agent’s phone. Griffin can step in as Smith’s No. 2 and hope that a door opens. It’s a cushy gig with a promising team, and one that could give Griffin time to get his mojo back until an opportunity arises.
