Redskins Grades: Kirk Cousins vs the Atlanta Falcons

The Fourth Quarter

The Falcons get their first touchdown of the game on the first drive of the fourth quarter but fail on the two point conversion to lead the Redskins 12-7. On first down, Cousins runs a play action fake to the left and rolls out to the right to hit Crowder on a crossing route for a ten yard gain and a first down. The pass was well behind Crowder but he was able to spin and snare the ball while on the move. +2pts.

Cousins throws another wide receiver screen to his new favorite receiver, Crowder. He follows excellent blocking for a 26 yard gain before being stopped from behind. From the Falcons 44 yard line, Cousins throws a deep pass into the end zone to Rashad Ross but the ball hangs in the air too long to fall incomplete. Ross draws a pass interference penalty giving the Redskins a first down at the one yard line. +2pts.

Jones runs in for a touchdown to give the Redskins back the lead 13-12. They go for a two point conversion but the play is poorly designed. Cousins rolls to his right with Crowder open briefly but continues to sprint to the sideline. Under pressure as he reaches the sideline Cousins throws incomplete to a covered Carrier. 0pts.

Bashaud Breeland intercepts Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to give the Redskins a chance to solidify their lead. Cousins throws short to Thompson in between two Jones runs and he turns up field for a nine yard gain down to the ten yard line. +2pts.

Jones runs again to give the Redskins a third down and goal at the six yard line. On another bad play call, Cousins throws another wide receiver screen to Crowder but Carrier misses a key block and he loses 4 yards on the reception. Dustin Hopkins makes a field goal and the Redskins lead 16-12. 0pts.

The Falcons drive down the field and score a touchdown to retake the lead, 19-16. with only 24 seconds remaining, Cousins throws quickly to Carrier who turns up the right sideline and gets out of bounds after a 20 yard gain. Cousins throw his best pass of the day to Garcon for a 19 yard gain on a shallow post. Cousins put the ball low for Garcon who cradled the ball and the Redskins called timeout.+4pts.

With ten seconds remaining, Cousins throws a quick out to the left to Crowder who has to turn his body to make the catch but is able to spin back around and get out of bounds. With five seconds left, Hopkins kicks a 52 yard field goal to tie the ball game and send it into overtime. +2pts.
