5. Redskins Safeties vs. Texans QB’s

The Washington Redskins will have a set of brand new starters a safety this year.  Dashon Goldson will start at free safety and Duke Ihenacho and Jeron Johnson are competing to see who will open up as the starter at strong safety.

More from Commanders News

Last year, the Redskins safeties struggled in pass coverage but most of them are no longer with the team.  The Redskins need the new safeties to be a clear upgrade over last season and these joint practices against the Texans will be a good chance to show that.

Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer and Tom Savage are competing for the starting quarterback job.  While the Texans have solid talent at the position, my thinking is that the Redskins safeties should be able to have success in coverage against those signal callers.

Duke Ihenacho has looked good so far in training camp and holds a slight edge over Johnson.  So this is a camp battle that should be watched closely.  Also, unless Goldson performs better than his stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers then the loser of Johnson vs. Ihenacho could start over him as well.

If the Redskins safeties look sharp against the Texans QB’s then it’s a step in the right direction but if they look bad against mostly mediocre passers, then it would suggests there’s a lot of work to do.
