Robert Griffin III versus the Cincinnati Bengals 2012-The Second Quarter
Griffin continued to struggle in the second quarter. The first drive was almost another three and out with Griffin’s only pass incomplete on third down. A pass interference penalty on first down called against Cincinnati was the lone first down of the drive.
The next drive was even worse with Griffin fumbling on second down and the Bengals recovering. The Redskins tried the read option pitch that had been successful the previous week versus the St. Louis Rams. Griffin was smothered trying to make the pitch, hence the fumble.
Griffin was able to lead the Redskins to their first offensive points on his last drive of the first half. It began with a sensational 55 yard punt return by Brandon Banks. The Bengals pressured Griffin into two incomplete passes next but Griffin scrambled for the first on third down.
The only completed pass of the drive was a screen to Royster that lost a yard. Griffin had another incomplete pass before running a draw on third down to set up a field goal. The Redskins trailed the Bengals 24-10 at the half.
The Bengals defense confounded the Redskins offense the entire half. Griffin scored 3 points on 6 called pass plays for a 0.50 rating for the quarter. One of the six plays involved play action and one was a screen pass. Griffin had -1 point on 3 designed run plays for a -0.33 run play rating for the half.
