Alvin “Bud” Dupree, OLB

College Team: Kentucky

Size: 6’4″, 269 lbs

Speed: 40yd-4.56, 10yd-1.61

Measurements: Arms-32 and 5/8″, Hands-9 and 3/4″

Bud Dupree played at Kentucky so he went under the radar for much of the college football season. Then came the combine and Dupree wowed everyone with his workouts. Now, Dupree is mentioned in the upper echelon of outside linebackers with Vic Beasley, Dante Fowler, Randy Gregory and Shane Ray.

Dupree had 7.5 sacks in 2014 to give him 23.5 in his four years at Kentucky. At the combine, Dupree had an 11’6″ broad jump which was first in the linebacker group and an amazing third overall. His vertical jump of 42″ was second among all linebackers.

Dupree is the best coverage linebacker in the first round

Strengths:

Dupree is the best coverage outside linebacker in the first round. That isn’t a major factor for an outside linebacker though. He is also a good run defender and will lay a good hit on the ball carrier.

Dupree uses his long arms well to keep blockers away and has quick moves when getting to the quarterback. He has good field vision to diagnose plays and locate the ball. Dupree has all the physical tools needed to be a star at the NFL level.

Weaknesses:

Dupree has sub-par instincts. He often is hesitant to make a play as if he is unsure of himself. Dupree will also take himself out of a play at times.

Dupree has a tough time freeing himself up from blocks when engaged. His production didn’t show as well as it should with his superior athletic talents. Dupree is an under-achiever and needs to prove he can measure up to his talent.

Redskins fit:

Dupree would come in and be the top reserve at OLB for the Redskins. He would not be a key pass rusher however and that could work to his advantage as he wouldn’t get as much attention from the offensive line as his teammates. Dupree would not be expected to play a key role as a rookie other than on special teams.

Dupree needs a coach that can unlock his potential. He has had good but not great production in college and has to make the choice of whether he is going to be a star or just another outside linebacker.
