The FCC should “consider” but not ban Redskins name

It’s been reported that a petition was filed to the FCC for the word Redskins to be banned on national television and the FCC is considering banning use of the word Redskins and fining those commentators and networks who use the name.

And being that the FCC is a government agency they rightfully should consider the merits of the petition as they should any other petition.  But if the FCC truly wants to be fair about this issue and not join the politically correct witch hunt to change the name then they should rule against the banning the name.

The name isn’t used to offend anyone and even though people keep lumping the word into the same category of derogatory terms as the n-word if you use your common sense you know it’s not the same thing.  I’ll say it again you name a team after something that you admire and not something you hate.

Who would anyone name a sports team the “n-words”?  It makes absolutely no logical sense and that’s why it’s not a legitimate argument.  All this is, is nothing more than a witch hunt for those of other races who don’t really care about Native Americans, only about defending their own beliefs about political correctness in our society.

If these people really cared about the issues facing Native Americans then they would see that the name of a football team isn’t that big of an issue compared to poverty, education, and drug abuse.  So why not speak out on issues that really matter in people’s lives instead fighting the name of a football team?

But putting the name of a football team as a higher priority than these other issues only serves to marginalize what’s really important.  All of these politicians and pundits come out with these statements saying the Redskins should change their name but you don’t hear them say much of anything about the bigger issues facing Native Americans.

Why?  Because poverty isn’t as polarizing an issue as racism is in this country.   And many criticize Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder for keeping the name but at least he’s doing something by creating a foundation (The Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation) to help tackle the issues facing Native Americans in this country.

And some even criticize Snyder for that.  But some of those being critical and who want the name changed should ask themselves what they’ve done to bring awareness to these issues?  Probably nothing.  Changing the name of a football team won’t help Native Americans fight poverty and it won’t help stop violence and drug abuse either.

It might make some of the champions of political correctness feel better about themselves but changing the name won’t really solve anything.  In fact the existence of the name brings more awareness to these issues as it forces people to recognize that there are actually much bigger issues facing Native Americans than the name of a football team.

And I understand that many Native Americans oppose the name but many Native Americans support it as well.  Those against the name don’t care to acknowledge that fact.  So the FCC should recognize that not everyone views the word Redskins as a racial slur including some who are supposed to be directly offended by it.

It’s not like the n-word or other slurs that only those who have no other argument try to claim someone would name a sports team after.  Again, racial slurs promote hatred.  But you don’t name a team after something that you hate do you?  You name a team after something you admire.
