The playoffs are inching closer, and there are postseason implications for several teams. The Washington Commanders got a win over the Philadelphia Eagles, albeit a rough one, to enhance their chances of reaching the knockout stage considerably. It's looking more like Dan Quinn's squad will reach this milestone for the first time since 2020.
Several former Commanders players around the league are gearing up to get in the playoffs with their new employers. Some are coming to the fore while others are floundering with the spotlight glaring.
Here are two ex-Commanders who struggled and one who thrived in Week 16.
Two former Commanders players who struggled and one who thrived in Week 16
Kendall Fuller
Kendall Fuller spent six of his first eight years in the NFL with the Commanders. He was a strong cornerback for the defense. Unfortunately for the veteran, he hasn't enjoyed the best of fortunes since signing for the Miami Dolphins.
This rough start to his span with the Dolphins continued last week, as he had another subpar performance against the San Francisco 49ers.
If you're an elite cornerback you very rarely get targeted frequently unless it's a go-to option capable of winning any matchup. If you do, you rarely let up receptions.
Fuller was targeted six times and conceded four receptions for 52 yards. He also had a rough day tackling, putting up a 45.1 grade according to Pro Football Focus.
Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins did not feature in Week 16. Thet was due to the veteran being benched in favor of first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. against the New York Giants.
Cousins will now likely be cut at some point soon, which comes with another extortionate dead-cap figure attached. The signal-caller has also taken time away from the team for personal reasons.
The former Commanders field general is seeing his career start to possibly dwindle. What the future holds remains to be seen, but his days as an undisputed starter are a thing of the past.
Kamren Curl shone for the Rams in Week 16
Kamren Curl was a fan favorite in Washington for the opening four years of his career. This was due to how likable of a story he has. After being drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the explosive safety forced his way onto the field and became one of the defensive stalwarts throughout Ron Rivera's tenure.
The former Arkansas Razorback hasn't had exactly a great first year with the Los Angeles Rams. However, Curl had a strong performance against the New York Jets.
Run defense was always Curl's strong suit, and that was evident in this game. He put up three tackles and an 83.1 tackling grade by Pro Football Focus. He also posted a 92.5 pass-rush grade, racking up a sack. He was targeted only three times and let up two receptions for 19 receiving yards.
