Amik Robertson's solid day
Amik Robertson was an overlooked signing by the Washington Commanders this offseason. The undersized yet feisty cornerback came into the franchise with lofty goals to become a legitimate alpha presence, but there were more than a few skeptics.
Robertson has done a tremendous amount to silence his doubters over the first three games. He was once again assured in coverage while also bringing some much-needed physicality against the run. And at a time when the depth is coming under fire, it's good to have at least one stable presence.
This is highly encouraging. And if cornerback Trey Amos returns from injured reserve soon, hope might not be lost for the secondary just yet.
Commanders' impressive first half display
Given that most expected the Commanders to roll over en route to their third straight loss to begin the season, their first-half performance was highly encouraging. The defense was aggressive, and the offense was seemingly in control against a formidable adversary.
It was a pleasant surprise, to put it mildly. The Commanders weren't overawed. They were in control and eager to prove that there is more to this team than just quarterback Jauden Daniels.
They were never going to completely contain the Seahawks; the champions are far too good for that. However, the Commanders more than held their own, and Dan Quinn must have been thrilled with his squad's response.
Commanders lost another key performer
The Commanders have dealt with their fair share of injury problems to start the season. Several top stars missed this one, and things got worse when free-agent signing Leo Chenal was carted off the field after a scary-looking injury.
Chenal has struggled over his first two games but looked a lot more comfortable before this unfortunate incident. There was great concern, with every teammate around him while he received treatment. However, he was pumping his fist to the crowd upon leaving the field, which is hopefully a good sign.
With Frankie Luvu also out right now, the Commanders' depth at the defensive second level is being tested. And if Chenal is out long-term, general manager Adam Peters needs to consider additional reinforcements.
Sonny Styles has arrived
After Leo Chenal's injury and Frankie Luvu's absence, the Commanders needed a big game from rookie linebacker Sonny Styles. And not for the first time in his brief NFL career, the No. 7 overall selection delivered.
This was Styles' coming-out party. He had an interception and a forced fumble. The Ohio State product looked disciplined against the run and was able to make a lasting contribution in coverage. It was the sort of complete performance that the Commanders envisaged. And it's happening a lot sooner than expected.
If this is the start of things to come from Styles, the Commanders got a good one. And he is only going to get better from here.
