Stefon Diggs is as advertised
The Washington Commanders were expecting big things from veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. He caused a stir by using the goalpost to celebrate a score against the Philadelphia Eagles, and he was eager to make up for his mistake.
Diggs knows how to get open. He makes tough chances look routine, and he is a menace in the red zone. This was evident again in Week 2, when the Maryland product caught touchdown passes from both Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota.
It wasn't enough to change the overall outcome, but Diggs is proving ultra-dependable no matter who is under center.
Mike Sainristil's flaws were exposed again
Washington's secondary never had it easy in Week 2. They struggled against the Eagles, and facing the prolific wide receiver tandem of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens was another tough task.
That proved to be the case. Early on, Lamb took charge. Things simmered a little later, but when the Cowboys needed to gain yards through the air, they did so with minimal fuss. And once again, it was Mike Sainristil who was targeted as a weak link with great success.
Sainristil just looks lost right now. Washington took him out of the firing line briefly, but his flaws keep getting exposed. And it won't be long before the tipping point is reached.
Another up and down day for Drew Stevens
The Commanders have to ride the rookie wave with Drew Stevens if they want him to become their long-term option. The rookie kicker had another up-and-down day in Week 2, a trend that might continue throughout the campaign.
This is the risk Washington was willing to take. Stevens has a booming leg, and he can make kicks from anywhere. The problem is staying grounded in the crunch, and that doesn't happen overnight in the NFL.
Stevens has talent, and he earned the right to be Washington's starting kicker this season. But he'll need to be more consistent at some point.
Commanders undone by egregious call
Nothing went right for the Commanders, and the refs didn't help either.
They completely botched a crucial call when Marcus Mariota threw a beautiful pass that wide receiver Dyami Brown caught expertly. He had the football secured and his feet in bounds as he crossed the end zone, but the officials ruled it out, and the video replay confirmed it.
An egregious call when the Commanders were still trying to claw back the deficit. And though it may not have had a considerable impact on the eventual result, it didn't exactly help.
