Commanders should monitor Michael Pittman Jr.

The Washington Commanders need to prioritize their defensive options this offseason. At the same time, general manager Adam Peters must continue to enhance the supporting cast around quarterback Jayden Daniels.

This is especially significant in the wide receiver room. Only Terry McLaurin, Jaylin Lane, and Luke McCaffrey are guaranteed to be on the 53-man roster next season. More is undoubtedly needed, and the Commanders could use someone with the scope to stretch the field.

Michael Pittman Jr. is an interesting candidate. The Indianapolis Colts saw Alec Pierce surge into breakout territory, resulting in some down numbers from his teammate. The 2020 second-round pick still managed 80 receptions for 784 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, so the AFC South club could be looking for a trade partner rather than an outright release.

Cutting Pittman would save the Colts $24 million. That's a lot of money to better spend elsewhere, so the Commanders should be keeping tabs on the wideout.

Commanders should monitor Rashan Gary

The Commanders are desperately seeking help on the defensive edge. Adam Peters has made no secret of his desire to strengthen the unit, which lacked dynamism and speed, as the general manager relied heavily on aging veterans well past their primes.

There should be some enticing options available in free agency or the draft. Peters will also be monitoring possible cut candidates around the NFL for potential help, and Rashan Gary's situation with the Green Bay Packers won't go unnoticed.

Gary is still a high-end performer when firing on all cylinders. The Packers would save $19.5 million on their 2026 cap with a post-June 1 release, which is a tempting proposition after the team acquired Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys last year.

The former Michigan star wouldn't solve every problem, but Gary has the potential to get Washington a lot closer.

Commanders should monitor Minkah Fitzpatrick

The Miami Dolphins are going through a roster reset of epic proportions. They released four veterans to begin their new era, with high-profile names such as All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Bradley Chubb among those seeking new homes.

They might not be done, either. Speculation is running rampant about the future of standout safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who some experts in the media believe is next on the chopping block. And make no mistake; the Commanders should be keeping a close eye on developments.

Fitzpatrick was exceptional on a poor Dolphins team last season. His 81.8 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked seventh among all qualifying safeties. There would be a queue of suitors seeking his services if released, but the Commanders could offer him a decent financial package. And he would instantly become an upgrade on anything Washington currently has on the back end.
