Commanders could sign Jaelan Phillips

If the Washington Commanders want a little extra freedom during the draft, especially with the No. 7 overall selection, they have to be aggressive in free agency. And it came as no surprise to see general manager Adam Peters identify the edge-rushing room as a priority.

Peters didn't do enough to fortify this critical area of the field last season. Aging veterans on the downward slope of their respective careers looked slow, incapable of generating pressure consistently or setting clean edges against the run. That has to change, and the front-office leader must spare no expense to solve this ongoing riddle.

If the Commanders could lure Jaelan Phillips from the Philadelphia Eagles, that would be a major statement of intent. The accomplished veteran has stated his desire to test the market and see what else is out there. And this is the sort of well-rounded edge who could thrive in Daronte Jones's schematic concepts.

Commanders could sign Wan'Dale Robinson

As previously mentioned, the Commanders are desperately short of dependable options in the wide receiver room heading into the offseason. New offensive coordinator David Blough wants to build around Terry McLaurin, and rightfully so. But despite his glittering credentials, he cannot do it alone.

This need becomes even greater if the Commanders don't decide to re-sign Deebo Samuel Sr. Aside from McLaurin, Luke McCaffrey, and Jaylin Lane, nobody else is guaranteed to return. That's a problem if Washington wants quarterback Jayden Daniels to bounce back.

Placing an onus on young, dynamic playmakers in free agency is crucial. Wan'Dale Robinson fits the mold, and he'd be a tremendous option if the New York Giants cannot put together the right financial package to keep him around.

Robinson was an electrifying and dependable option for the Giants' offense in 2025, recording 92 receptions for 1,014 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He'd be the perfect replacement for Samuel as Washington's versatile weapon.

Commanders could sign Alontae Taylor

The Commanders have some questions to solve at the cornerback position. Their personnel just isn't up to the required standard right now, especially given the scheme's new defensive coordinator, Daronte Jones, plans to run in Washington.

Trey Amos showed tremendous promise as a rookie before getting hurt. Mike Sainristil is a risk-taker who creates turnovers, but he needs to improve his discipline in coverage. There is a good chance everyone else will leave, and four-time Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore is expected to be cut in the coming days.

More is needed. The Commanders need another young prospect via the draft and at least two veterans with proven production. Alontae Taylor is coming off his best campaign since being drafted, emerging as a lockdown presence with the New Orleans Saints. He's also still just 27, so the player's best years are firmly ahead.

Whether it's Taylor or someone else, the Commanders must make a cornerback splash.
