Not everyone was going to go through. Percy Butler was among those facing an uncertain future. But when the Commanders released veteran Will Harris after his disastrous preseason showing against the Detroit Lions, his chances of sticking around improved exponentially.
Butler has always been a polarizing figure among fans. He's struggled when given reps on the defensive rotation, but the Louisiana product is a valued special-teams player, which was enough to see him through.
This is key for anyone lower down the depth chart. Butler must continue this trend to get another contract in 2027.
Tyler Owens - Commanders DB
Tyler Owens has been something of an enigma over his first two years in Washington. The physically imposing defensive back has always possessed elite-level athleticism, but previous defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. kept him on the fringes, unable to find ways to maximize his gifts.
Daronte Jones has changed all that.
Jones has used Owens all over his defense. He's spent time at both safety spots, at linebacker, as a big nickel cornerback, and even coming off the defensive edge on blitz packages. More importantly, it's lit a fire under the Texas Tech product that hasn't been seen before.
Owens has grown in confidence. He made plays in the preseason, and he's finally starting to put everything together. Keeping him around as a restricted free agent next year should be pretty straightforward if his performances warrant such a move this season.
