Keith Marshall injured his right knee on a running play during practice. The same knee he injured in college.

Keith Marshall already faced an uphill battle to make the roster. After spending last season on injured reserve, the Georgia product was no doubt eager to make an impression on the Redskins’ coaching staff. However, his health appears to have suffered a blow once again, although it remains to be seen how serious the injury is. Mike Jones of the Washington Post first reported the incident on Twitter.

Marshall seemed to be having a very good training camp, earning the praise of Jay Gruden. Although Gruden isn’t short on praise when it comes to most players, he mentioned Marshall unprompted multiple times. Soon, he’ll have to mention him unprompted once again, this time to provide an injury update.

This injury is a scary one. Although the severity is not yet known, the injury is to Marshall’s right knee, the same knee he tore his ACL in early in his college career. Reaggravating such an injury can be devastating for a player’s chances, especially a young, unproven player like Marshall. If the injury at least has moderate degree of severity, then Marshall could spend another season on injured reserve.

The Redskins lose a player with upside in Marshall if his injury is notable. But the team has little time, or reason, to mourn. The running back stable is filled to the brim with young, exciting players, and the unit as a whole shouldn’t suffer with the loss of Marshall.

Nevertheless, it’s always hard to see a young player go down. Marshall has an incredible combination of size and speed, but he’s never quite found out how to put it together and compete. It sounded like he was making progress this offseason. Injuries don’t have a favorable impact on progress.

One can only hope Marshall’s injury isn’t serious. A seventh round pick from 2016, he has more potential than most, and another setback will hurt his development. Here at Riggo’s Rag, we’ll be sure to provide any updates on Marshall’s situation. And be sure to keep up on our training camp content. The regular season grows closer with every passing day. Hopefully, players can stay healthy along the way.
