Re-grading the Commanders 2023 NFL Draft class after one season

Ron Rivera's no longer head coach of the Washington Commanders for a variety of reasons, but the poor returns from the team's 2023 NFL Draft class are one of the biggest.

Quan Martin - Commanders DB

  • Defensive Back | Illinois Fighting Illi
  • No. 47 overall

When Quan Martin's name was called early in the second round, I had visions of a hybrid defender who would act as a matchup equalizer. A defensive back with the build of a safety with cornerback skills.

Facing the Philadelphia Eagles and tight end Dallas Goedert? No worries, have Martin shadow No. 88. Give him the same roving brief against the Dallas Cowboys and Jason Ferguson, against Darren Waller and the New York Giants.

Speaking of the Giants, they want to split Saquon Barkley out wide, the Washington Commanders could shuttle Martin across to matchup underneath. Want to create pressure? Send the Illinois product from the slot.

This is how things should've worked. Unfortunately, Martin was limited to playing outside cornerback to cover injuries.

There's an upside, though. Notably, Martin snatching two interceptions and breaking up four passes. He also helped himself to a sack.

Those numbers hint at the versatility and playmaking flair Martin possesses. Qualities the Commanders have to use in more elaborate ways in 2024 or risk calling this a wasted pick.

Draft Grade: B-
