Which Washington Commanders news stories are hitting the headlines after their impressive preseason victory at the Cleveland Browns?

It took a while to get going thanks to some severe weather conditions, but the Washington Commanders showed out for the fans and new owners that made the trip to Cleveland. A 17-15 triumph against the Browns was a good start, but there is a lot to clean up before they take the field in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals in front of a sold-out FedEx Field crowd.

Among the stories causing conversation after the win include Ron Rivera's thoughts, Sam Howell's level of comfort, Chase Young's injury scare, and Josh Harris' current mindset as his honeymoon period continues.

Let's delve into each topic in more detail.

Commanders get Chase Young injury scare

The last thing any Washington Commanders fan wanted to see was Chase Young heading to the sidelines with a complication. That's exactly what happened after just four snaps at the Cleveland Browns, which came with everyone collectively holding their breath.

Thankfully for the player and the Commanders, it was nothing too serious. Head coach Ron Rivera stated that Young had suffered a stinger and was held out as a precaution. The former Ohio State star wasn't expected to play more than a series in any case, so those in power were right to err on the side of caution.

Whether Young features in Washington's two remaining preseason games remains to be seen. But this is a reminder of what potential complications could emerge by putting starters onto the field.

Commanders QB Sam Howell's solid night

After a decent enough training camp so far for Sam Howell, it was time to see what the former fifth-round selection could do in a typical game-day setting. The Washington Commanders opted to start the signal-caller during their preseason opener at the Cleveland Browns and would have been delighted by what they saw overall.

Howell completed 75 percent of his passes for 77 yards through the air, one touchdown, no interceptions, and a fantastic 119.1 passer rating. He was sacked once and gained eight yards rushing on a single carry.

While there are some things to clean up, Howell seemed pleased with how things went based on his post-game comments via Nicki Jhabvala from the Washington Post. Specifically, the way everything clicked progressively with each series he was on the field.

"I thought it was solid. Obviously got off to a slow start with the first two drives but I thought the third drive was really good. I was proud of our guys with how we battled back after a rough two drives and we gave up a safety. Think our ability to bounce back was definitely good and we put some good things on film."

This is a good start from Howell all things considered. The offensive line remains a real cause for concern, but his poise in the pocket and ability to go through his progressions were just two encouraging traits the former fifth-rounder out of North Carolina displayed impressively.

Long may it continue.

Commanders owner Josh Harris hails fans

Although the weather was less than ideal, it didn't stop Josh Harris and members of his ownership group from watching the Washington Commanders in action for the first time since their landmark $6.05 billion transaction received NFL approval. The majority stakeholder wasn't in a lavish suite - instead preferring to brave out the heavy rain among the fans who've already taken him to their hearts.

Ron Rivera gave Harris the game ball to mark another milestone. But the billionaire was keen to recognize the fans when speaking on the broadcast via JP Finlay and Nicki Jhabvala, indicating there is a lot of hard work ahead.

"It’s not my team, it’s the city’s team. Being out here and being part of the team that I cheer for and that I grew up with is incredible. At the same time I can feel the pressure, it’s the beginning of a long season and we have to get it done. I know Washington fans were out there. I see them in the stands here. It’s so exciting to be here at my first game. Obviously we’re going in with a lead and we have to get it done. We’re very excited to get started and thank you Washington. Keep coming and cheering these guys on."

This is still a honeymoon period of sorts for Harris. He's made some impactful changes to overall fan experiences throughout camp, which is set to continue during the regular season despite the short time frame involved.

There is finally light at the end of the tunnel. And if nothing else, Harris is fully aware of what this team means to a fanbase that became demoralized beyond measure under the previous owner.

Ron Rivera pleased with Commanders QB

As previously stated, it was an encouraging outing all things considered for quarterback Sam Howell. There were some throws he'd like to have back and the protection in front of him wasn't exactly stellar, but it represented a solid platform from which to build ahead of his second professional campaign.

Ron Rivera also liked what he saw from Howell based on his post-game statements via Nicki Jhabvala from The Washington Post. In particular, the taking charge of the huddle and decision-making that the head coach was planning to examine in great detail.

"Very encouraged. A lot of good things. I thought, again, he threw some really good balls. I thought the decision-making was what you want. He looked to have command of things, and it was good to see him get into a rhythm."

Rivera didn't make things easy for himself this week with his ill-advised comments about certain players reportedly being unhappy with Eric Bieniemy's coaching methods. Even the veteran coaches get learning experiences sometimes, which is what he should chalk this down to as everyone moves on.

The coach is banking heavily on Howell producing the goods next season with new ownership watching every move closely. Hopefully, this can be the start of a profitable relationship in 2023 and possibly beyond.
