Commanders could draft Darnell Washington

  • Selection – Round No. 2 (Pick No. 47)
  • Height – 6-foot-7 | Weight – 270 pounds
  • 2022 statistics – 28 receptions | 454 receiving yards | 2 touchdowns

Darnell Washington‘s numbers won’t stand out on paper. He was used more as a blocker due to his massive frame and played behind a potential top-10 2024 NFL Draft pick in Brock Bowers.

When I look at the prospect and his fit on the Washington Commanders, a few things really stand out to me. Starting with his size and blocking ability.

With the Commanders’ offensive line having some issues last season, Washington brings in immediate help and is essentially another tackle when on the field. This would be a major boost to Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett on a potential three-down basis.

Next would be his untapped potential. Some things can’t be taught, and size is one of them.

At 22 years of age, Washington has the potential to be a better NFL pro than a college player. His lack of speed limits his downfield ability, but his intermediate routes and red zone potential can be groomed to a pro-style offense.

Another projected second-round selection, Washington could again be used as a blocker, while taking the year to better himself in the passing game. And if the Georgia product fully maximizes his immense physical attributes, someone is going to have a phenomenal player on their hands.
