12 under-the-radar free agents Commanders should target in 2023
Commanders could target Devin Bush
- Linebacker | Pittsburgh Steelers
When the Pittsburgh Steelers took Devin Bush with the No. 10 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, they were hoping for an impact player. He has been solid over the years, but some lofty expectations haven’t been reached.
The Washington Commanders at the very least would be getting a good inside linebacker. Could Bush become the star that Pittsburgh envisioned a few years ago in a different environment? It wouldn’t hurt to find out one way or another.
Commanders could target David Long
- Linebacker | Tennessee Titans
Remember that painful loss to the Tennessee Titans back in early October? The inside linebacker that sealed the victory on the final play – an interception at the goal line – was David Long.
Long is another good option on the inside for the Commanders and he is likely to be available. But this is one that Washington could easily afford.
Commanders could target Dalvin Tomlinson
- Defensive Tackle | Minnesota Vikings
If Daron Payne becomes a free agent, then Washington will need to react accordingly. Dalvin Tomlinson is a decent pass rusher and a run stuffer, even if their current defensive tackle option is better.
Also, the Minnesota Vikings have a large negative cap situation. If Payne is retained with a new contract or franchise tag, the Commanders will not be active at all in the defensive tackle market.
Commanders could target Chris Wormley
- Defensive Tackle | Pittsburgh Steelers
Like Tomlinson, the same set of circumstances applies to Chris Wormley of the Steelers. He may not have the gaudy stats that fans desire, but his analytics suggest that Wormley is dependable and willing to routinely take on double-teaming from offensive linemen.
Commanders could target Cameron Sutton
- Cornerback | Pittsburgh Steelers
Cameron Sutton is in his prime and he is affordable. Two things the Commanders need within their secondary this offseason.
The Steelers are a bit needy for cap space and cornerback is a need for Washington. Sutton could be part of a solid rotation but look for the front office to add a talented prospect early in the draft, too.
Commanders could target Greedy Williams
- Cornerback | Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns drafted Greedy Williams in the second round four years ago and he came with a world of potential. That is what the Commanders would be purchasing.
His cost would be minimal. Can he finally produce and live up to the expectations? Is it worth taking a small gamble on Williams? Only time will tell.
Free agency will be here in an instant and the craziness is just around the corner. We will have a lot to talk about in the days and weeks to come. See you as we go along.
