3 reasons Commanders can upset the Eagles in Week 10
By Jerry Trotta
1. Taylor Heinicke won’t be overwhelmed by the moment
The Eagles beat the Commanders 24-8 in their first meeting this season. What was the biggest deciding factor in that matchup? For most, it was the offensive line giving Carson Wentz zero time in the pocket. That’s a fair argument, but for us it was Wentz’s dreadful pocket navigation and feel for pressure.
Wentz was rattled and overwhelmed by Philly’s unrelenting pass rush. The second the pocket broke down, Wentz gave himself up. That shouldn’t be a problem with Heinicke. Even if Heinicke is pressured consistently, his mobility presents a different matchup for Brandon Graham and company, so you can expect less sacks.
Beating the Eagles’ elite secondary presents another challenge, but at least Heinicke will have a chance to make plays. Wentz didn’t give himself a chance.
Furthermore, Heinicke embraces the big stage and he’s shown an ability to go toe-to-toe with top-tier quarterbacks. He’s done it against Aaron Rodgers twice (one win), Tom Brady’s Buccaneers (twice), Russell Wilson (last season’s version) and Justin Herbert in Week 1 of last season.
Incredibly, Heinicke is 4-2 in those games.
Everyone recognizes Heinicke’s flaws as a passer, What can’t be questioned, though, is his leadership, toughness and unflappable mental fortitude. Would it really surprise you if Heinicke magic returned Monday night in Philly?
