3 reasons Commanders shouldn’t bench Carson Wentz for Taylor Heinicke

1. Heinicke doesn’t have Wentz’s arm talent

As much as Heinicke might have a full grasp of the playbook and be familiar with Washington’s receivers and tight ends, he doesn’t have Wentz’s arm talent. That’s a big deal, as Scott Turner really expanded the playbook in Weeks 1 and 2 against Jacksonville and Detroit.

Turner wasn’t capable of doing that with Heinicke last season. Think about the fourth quarter touchdowns to Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson in Week 1. Wentz is probably one of a handful of quarterbacks who could make those throws. Whenever Heinicke attempted a downfield throw in 2021, it would either sail out of bounds or his receivers would have to pause their route and wait for the ball.

Another example that favors Wentz is the Dotson touchdown against the Cowboys. Wentz dropped the throw into a bucket in the corner of the end zone. Does Heinicke have the requisite touch to make that pass? Probably not.

That’s a big deal and you better believe it’ll be considered during the decision-making process. What say you, Commanders fans? Should the team stick with Wentz or see if Heinicke can jumpstart this stationary offense?
