1. More 3 safety looks (when Kam Curl is back)

Listen, there’s no easy fix for this defense. The best thing the Commanders can do is replace the guy in charge of the scheme and preparation. Assuming that’s not in the realm of possibility this early into the season, they need to change up their personnel in a big way.

For those saying the D will turn a corner when Chase Young and Kam Curl get back, slow down for a second. Both players were healthy and in the lineup for the first half of last season when Washington allowed upwards of 30 points per game.

Having said that, Curl’s eventual return (hopefully in Week 3) will allow the Commanders more flexibility with the looks they throw offenses. The first change that comes to mind is playing three safeties — McCain, Curl and Darrick Forrest — to both help the secondary and have more bodies to defend the run.

Plus, it’ll mean less playing time for David Mayo, whom the Lions attacked whenever he subbed in for Jamin Davis. Safety is a position of strength for Washington and Curl’s return and overall versatility should result in improved play across the board.

If that doesn’t happen, you have our permission to fire Jack Del Rio.
