3 areas Carson Wentz must improve at Commanders training camp
By Jerry Trotta
1. Accuracy
This one’s pretty basic, but it’s arguably the most important of the three. After all, what is a quarterback without his accuracy? Over the first several practices of camp, Wentz’s accuracy has been all over the place. On one play, he managed to overthrow 6-foot-6 rookie tight end Cole Turner and got picked by Kam Curl.
At Monday’s practice alone, Wentz had multiple throws to no man’s land during 11-on-11 drills and sailed passes over receivers heads. In fairness to the 29-year-old, the Commanders’ defense was flying around in the first week.
Let’s hope this changes when padded practices start. That should give Wentz more time in the pocket (defensive linemen don’t just get a free run at the QB).
For every “wow” moment Wentz has delivered thus far, he’s had three or four wonky passes. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’d trade three or four wow moments per game for 20-25 accurate passes. Whether it’s a lack of concentration or an unfamiliar system, Wentz needs to get his accuracy in order.
