3 forgotten players who could make Commanders’ 53-man roster
By Jerry Trotta
1. Antonio Gandy-Golden
After struggling to catch on as an NFL receiver, the Commanders made the executive decision — before consulting with the player — to shift Gandy-Golden to a full-time tight end. Though we don’t have any game film to analyze, the early returns have been overwhelmingly positive, as the 2020 fourth-round pick out of Liberty was one of several standouts on the offensive side of the ball during spring practices.
Between showing off his impressive catch radius and looking the part as a run-blocker, Gandy-Golden has made a seamless transition to TE. The only thing(s) working against the third-year pro, however, is the fact he’s incredibly raw Washington has ample other talents who are more refined and experienced.
From Logan Thomas, John Bates, Cole Turner, Curtis Hodges, Sammis Reyes and Armani Rodgers, the competition at training camp will be fierce.
Having said that, Thomas’ recovery from ACL surgery could give Gandy-Golden the break he needs to make the final roster. If the 30-year-old opens the season on injured reserve, the team would suddenly have another opening. With AGG presumably fourth in the pecking order behind Thomas, Bates and Turner, don’t be surprised if the 24-year-old finds his way onto the 53-man if the Commanders take a conservative approach in terms of easing Thomas back into the lineup.
