Could Carson Wentz and Terry McLaurin form next great QB-WR duo?

Carson Wentz and Terry McLaurin combine for 10+ TDs

This may not seem like too bold of a prediction, but the fact of the matter is that the Commanders have had exactly one player (Jordan Reed in 2015) get double-digit receiving TDs since 1991. The Commanders have the longest active streak of 30 consecutive seasons without a wide receiver recording double digit TDs. I believe this year that streak will come to an end.

Terry McLaurin will be targeted heavily in the red zone in 2022. Last season he led the WR room in red zone targets with nine, but what makes me feel confident he will get almost twice that number is the departure of Adam Humphries and DeAndre Carter. They leave the Commanders with a combined 10 red zone targets to be filled.

The offense is also most likely to get between the 20’s better with Wentz behind center. Since 2017, Wentz has thrown for at least 27 TDs three times, juxtapose that to the fact that Commanders QB’s have amassed that figure only twice in the last 30 years.

McLaurin excels in those red zone situations where catches are highly contested as he is the single best contested catch receiver in the NFL. McLaurin has the skills and Wentz has the green light to throw him the ball when it matters most. That feels like the perfect recipe for touchdowns, no?
