Ranking the Commanders’ 2022 opposing quarterbacks
This next tier of quarterbacks has three QB’s that I believe can be successful if everything around them is perfect.
Matt Ryan
The first is new Indianapolis QB Matt Ryan. We are a long way removed from MVP Matt Ryan that took a 28-3 lead over the Patriots in Super Bowl LI. This iteration of Ryan was unable to lead the Falcons to the postseason each of the last four years. This is not necessarily an indictment on Ryan, as the Falcons have done a terrible job of supporting him lately. The Colts, on the other hand, have an excellent running game and strong defense. Don’t be surprised if Matt Ryan is reinvigorated in Indianapolis just as both Phillip Rivers and Carson Wentz were the last two years.
Jalen Hurts
The next QB in this tier is Jalen Hurts. Hurts is an interesting case study as he has possibly the best offensive line in football, but really was not able to put it all together in 2021. The Eagles have done everything they could to help him succeed in 2022, and I do not know if he will be able to live up to their expectations. However, his rushing upside offers a very safe floor for the third-year QB to give an opposing defense a challenge.
Trevor Lawrence
The last QB in this tier has, admittedly, not done much to deserve to be in this tier, but I am basing this more off projection than anything. That quarterback is Trevor Lawrence, last year’s No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence.
The Jaguars and Urban Meyer were possibly the worst situation a quarterback could be thrust into and it showed with Lawrence struggling mightily through his rookie year to the tune of only 12 TDs and an NFL-leading 17 INTs. Despite all of the negatives, Lawrence showed serious flashes and was an undeniably spectacular prospect. He now gets Doug Pederson as a head coach who did an excellent job with helping Carson Wentz become an MVP candidate in his second season. I believe Trevor Lawrence is a very good quarterback who is just in a very bad situation. He deserves to be in this tier.
