3 remaining free agents who could bolster Commanders’ DL depth
By Jerry Trotta
1. Sheldon Richardson
With Akiem Hicks off the board, Sheldon Richardson might be the most recognizable defensive lineman left in free agency. If the Commanders choose to go the versatile route over signing a specialist like Joseph, they’d be hard-pressed to find someone better than Richardson at this stage of the offseason.
The former Defensive Rookie of the Year has aged like fine wine and has experience on both the interior and exterior of the line. Despite being 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds and turning 32 in November, Richardson has surprisingly been more effective lining along the edge over the last couple of seasons.
In 2021, Richardson generated 37 QB pressures and graded above 60.0 in every major metric, according to PFF. He was projected to sign a one-year, $3 million deal when free agency started. Even if he goes for more than that, the Commanders should match any offer with their newfound $18 million in cap space.
Like Joseph, Richardson is coming off the lowest snap share of his career (57 percent over 17 appearances and seven starts). Always hungry to produce, a grizzled vet like the former Pro Bowler should relish the opportunity to play behind two of the most talented interior defenders in the game.
If nothing else, his experience and reputation would be a welcome addition to Washington’s locker room, which could use another veteran. His arrival would also lessen the pressure on Mathis to produce as a rookie.
What’s there to lose?
