1. Bolster LB Position/Secondary

You know what we said about the post-draft free agency frenzy?

Well, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Saints, who hosted Mathieu on a free-agent visit leading up to the draft, are expected to re-visit their talks with the Pro Bowl defensive back. On Monday, the two sides reached an agreement, and yes, Mathieu was going to be our preferred big move.

Now, we’ll float multiple options: the Commanders bolstering their defense, whether it be their secondary, linebacker corps or defensive line.

With the LB unit still thin behind Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis, Alexander Johnson makes a ton of sense as a free-agent target. The former Bronco has the second-best run-defense grade at the position since 2019, per Pro Football Focus, and owns a 67.0 career coverage grade over 2,118 career snaps.

If Johnson doesn’t work out, Kwon Alexander, Anthony Hitchens and Joe Schobert are still currently braving free agency.

In terms of the DL, that hinges on Daron Payne’s future. As presently constructed, another lineman isn’t necessary. If Payne is traded, though, Star Lotulelei, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman and Danny Shelton are other potential options.

As far as the secondary is concerned, the Commanders could benefit from adding a safety or cornerback. Some names to monitor include Kyle Fuller, Xavier Rhodes, Fabian Moreau, Jaquiski Tartt, Jeff Heath and Tashaun Gipson.

Again, Mathieu was our top choice, but him returning home to New Orleans gives Washington several outlets to bolster their defense.

Next. Commanders earn respectable grades on first three picks. dark
