3 running backs Commanders can sign after JD McKissic’s departure
By Jerry Trotta
1. Duke Johnson
Duke Johnson’s skillset profiles the closest to McKissic’s, as he does a little bit of everything well. Like McKissic, Johnson has never had a three-down role and he’s more adept as a pass-catcher than a runner between the tackles.
In fact, he’s managed 600 more receiving yards than rushing yards over his career. While Washington is reportedly in the market for a RB who can handle early-down work, Johnson would be a nice addition regardless.
After not being used properly in Houston, the former Miami Hurricane star landed back home with the Dolphins in 2021 (he was born and raised in Miami) and made an immediate impact. In just five games, he compiled 330 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 4.6 YPC. Amazingly enough, he only caught four passes.
Though undersized at 5-foot-9 and 210 pounds, Johnson’s 4.3 career yards per carry proves he’s underrated as a runner. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Dolphins make a push to re-sign Johnson and pair him with new signing Chase Edmonds, but he’s still braving free agency, so he’s up for grabs.
The opportunity is there for Washington, but it might not be here for long.
