4 easiest offseason decisions for the Washington Commanders
By Jerry Trotta
1. Extend Terry McLaurin
We don’t ask for a lot in this world, but Terry McLaurin spending his entire career in Washington and catching passes from a quarterback who can bring his All-Pro talent to the forefront are FAR from unreasonable, don’t you think?
A good start on the former request would be to extend McLaurin this offseason. It’s the undisputed No. 1 objective for the Commanders.
Even with lackluster (to put it kindly) QB play over his first three years McLaurin has managed 3,090 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He led the NFL in contested catches in 2021 and became Washington’s first WR to register back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons since Henry Ellard did so three straight years from 1994-1996.
While McLaurin’s quarterback situation has prevented him from getting the recognition he deserves, it also hasn’t helped that he’s part of a great receiver class in 2019; one that produced the likes of Deebo Samuel, AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Hunter Renfrow and Diontae Johnson.
All six players are eligible for an extension, so it would behoove the Commanders to get a move on with McLaurin’s new contract before the market resets.
We aren’t typically in the business of inciting panic, but if McLaurin is still on his rookie contract come Week 1 of next season, fans will have every reason to lose faith (not all, but some) in the current regime, even if its other offseason moves pan out.
