2. Cam Sims

We’d love nothing more than for the Commanders to retain Cam Sims on a team-friendly contract this offseason. However, he’s out of a contract and could pursue greener pastures given the limited role he had in Washington’s offense.

Coming off a career year in 2020, the former undrafted free agent out of Alabama played just 31% of the offensive snaps this past season. Given the team found it impossible to muster production out of its wide receivers not named Terry McLaurin, fans never understood why Sims saw the field as little as he did.

It’d be one thing if Sims didn’t produce when he played, but that wasn’t the case. While he only caught 15 passes, 11 of them went for first downs. He also managed two touchdowns and averaged 14.1 yards per reception, which led the team.

Sims doesn’t quite have the foot speed to be an every down WR, but he’s more than capable of lining up in the slot. At 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds with a great catch radius and body control, he can be a No. 3 or 4 option in a functional offense.

While KJ Osborn emerged as a viable third option behind stars Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, that fourth spot should be up for grabs during the offseason. While Sims didn’t get much run under O’Connell’s tutelage in 2018 and 2019, the 26-year-old could jumpstart his career with his former offensive coordinator.
