The Washington Football Team will be financially equipped to pay Brandon Scherff what he’ll likely command on the open market. Whether they should acquiesce to his demands, however, is an entirely different story.

With five Pro Bowls on his resume, including three straight and an All-Pro nod last campaign, Scherff figures to be even more rigid in negotiations than year’s past, the last two of which saw him play under the franchise tag.

This marriage has been trending towards a divorce for some time now, and it feels like the band-aid will be ripped off this offseason. Assuming that happens, Washington will be in the market for a new right guard.

The 2022 draft class is rich at the center position, but Kenyon Green, Zion Johnson, Lecitus Smith, Ed Ingram and Bernhard Raimann give Washington plenty of replacement options at the guard positions.

If we had the choice of giving Scherff a blank check or developing one of the studs listed above, we’d side with the latter 10 times out of 10. It saves a ton of money and gives the front office more flexibility to splurge on more important positions.

And if whomever they draft isn’t ready to be a Day 1 starter, Washongton still has Wes Schweitzer and Saahdiq Charles, who impressed down the stretch of the regular season, as readily available internal replacements.
