The preseason MVP needs to see the field more.

While Antonio Gibson was arguably the team’s MVP during its four-game winning streak, all that progress was foiled after he fumbled for the sixth time (the fourth he’s lost) this season in a huge spot against the Cowboys.

Make no mistake, Washington will continue to lean on Gibson. The 2020 third-rounder has been a menace picking up yards after contact and getting him going takes a ton of pressure off Taylor Heinicke’s shoulders.

However, unless Gibson is in a groove, we see nothing wrong with having Patterson eat into his workload. Nobody would argue that Patterson is the superior player, but we can’t be the only ones who notice the spark he provides off the bench.

Thrust into a prominent role after Gibson was benched on Sunday, Patterson took four carries for 29 yards (7.3 average). Gibson, on the other hand, struggled to the tune of 36 rushing yards over 10 carries.

Even if JD McKissic clears concussion protocol in time for the Eagles, we’d like to see Patterson get around 5-7 touches every game the rest of the way.

It’s not the sexiest move, especially given how well Gibson performed before this past weekend, but if you can live with him still getting 25-30 touches per game after his latest back-breaking turnover, more power to you.
