Additional Thoughts

Let’s rank the most popular and reasonable choices with these names:

  • 1.  Wolves
  • 2.  Commanders
  • 3.  Unknown Name
  • 4.  Redwolves
  • 5.  Renegades
  • 6.  Sentinels
  • 7.  Burgundy and Gold
  • 8.  Washington Football Team
  • 9.  Monuments
  • 10.  Washington Football Club

This list is simply a measuring stick of what is popular now and what the team is reportedly considering.  Truth be told, this list could change drastically within a matter of days or weeks.  For now, these names are the best guesses possible.

Most reports suggest that Washington could announce a new name by next January or February – perhaps just prior to or after the Super Bowl.  Will the fans be happy or angry with the new name?  Will it generate excitement or disdain?  Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team became the Guardians a few days ago and the response was lukewarm.

The new name is going to be met with some sadness, anger, confusion, and disbelief, but that change will be in perpetuity.  Over a period of time, fans will slowly embrace that change and a new journey will begin.

To be quite frank and honest, the Washington Football Team should not embrace “Hail to the …” or have any kind of reference to the previous name.  Also, an entirely new song with lyrics and music should be adopted.  It’s time to move forward and while we can take pride in the past, it is now firmly in the history books.

Training camp and the preseason is upon us.  It’s time to migrate from free agency and the recent draft to a new and exciting season in 2021.  The team colors will not change, but for a few months longer, the current name will remain and we will finally say goodbye to the names of the past.  The future is nearly here and it is time to create new memories and traditions.
