Washington Football Team: Best locations and designs for a new stadium
Location No. 2
The second location rivals number one and can be considered option number 1B. Dulles, VA is home to the Dulles International Airport. The Washington Football Team headquarters is located eight miles to the north in Ashburn. Logistically, it would make a lot of sense to build a new stadium near the airport. The exact location would likely be just west and southwest of the airport. Here is what is needed to make this stadium location a reality.
First, the roads around the airport region will need numerous upgrades. U.S. Route 50, Highway 606, the Dulles toll road, Highway 286, Interstate 66, Highway 659, the Loudon County Parkway, Darrell Green Blvd, Sully Road, and Highway 609 will need to be widened.
Second, the metro rail station to Dulles will be completed in early 2022 and this gives the airport stadium location a jump on the competition. The metro could be expanded a bit further to include the new stadium and any new businesses that move into the airport district.
Third, the Hilton Hotel is located just to the east of the airport, but more hotels will need to be built. Better known chains such as Radisson, Gaylord, Marriott, MGM Resorts, Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, etc., should be encouraged to invest in this region.
This location is probably the leading candidate, but don’t rule out National Harbor. The governments of Maryland and Virginia are likely to make strong sales pitches to the Washington Football Team, but any stadium location will likely face some difficult hurdles. Any bureaucratic reviews will receive plenty of scrutinies, but both states are certain to expedite the process.
