1. Quarterback: Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. Taylor Heinicke vs. Kyle Allen

When was the last time a quarterback battle wasn’t the top position battle to watch in Washington? The team is continuing to search for its franchise quarterback and it still remains to be seen if they have one on their roster.

Fitzpatrick isn’t it. The 39-year-old veteran was a great stopgap signing, but he’s here to serve as insurance in case Heinicke (or Allen) isn’t ready to play.

Heinicke had a great performance against the Buccaneers in his lone start last year, which came in the playoffs, and capture the imaginations of Washington fans.

Did they find a diamond in the rough when they signed Heinicke after a couple of years away from the NFL? Surely. But can he be a quality starter, or is he just a solid, mobile backup? That’s what the team will have to find out.

Fitzpatrick vs. Heinicke will be the primary battle to watch, but Allen could have a role to play as well. It could be argued that Allen was the best of the Washington QBs that started during the regular season. He’s coming off a broken leg and appears to be third in the quarterback race right now, but he can’t be written off.

We’ll see what comes of this quarterback battle and if Washington has found something special in Heinicke. Either way, they appear to be in better shape than they were in last season at the quarterback spot.
