3. Long Snapper

That is right. One of the most overlooked positions in football will be getting some love. The long snapper. It is an integral part of three aspects of special teams, punts, extra points, and field goals.

If the long snapper snaps a poor ball, that could lead to a loss in the field position battle due to a poor punt, or a missed opportunity on a field goal or extra point. The long snapper is the position that kickstarts most of the special teams unit. Without a good one, then the rest cannot be as successful as they should be.

So that brings us to the immediate issue the Washington Football Team has at this spot. Their long-tenured long snapper of 10 years, Nick Sundberg, is a free agent and will not be brought back by the team according to Sundberg. Sundberg was always a steady player for the Washington Football Team, which is why many of you have never thought of this position before.

Sundberg was one of the best at what he did. Unfortunately, a string of recent injuries has hindered Sundberg’s play slightly and the team looks to upgrade the position. Washington has two options when addressing this position: Convert a player desperate for a chance into a long snapper or sign a rookie.

Some of the top long snappers in the 2021 NFL Draft include Camaron Cheeseman from Michigan and Thomas Fletcher from Alabama. It is safe to expect Washington to pick a long snapper up as a priority free agent or even spend a seventh-round pick on one.
