Washington Football Team three-round mock draft: Vision for the future

Round 1, Pick No. 19: Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa

Zaven Collins is the definition of height, weight, speed, and athleticism. The 6’5″, 259-pound linebacker is an ascending talent that could patrol the second level of Washington’s defense for the next decade. Anybody who watched a single Washington Football Team game this past season understands the linebacker position is a desperate need. When filled, it could really take this already high-end defense to the next level.

As a former high school quarterback, Collins like most rookie defenders will need to focus hard on film study with play diagnosis. That being said, his physical gifts should allow him to be a contributor in year one on an ascending roster. Lets face it though, when you have a defensive front like Washington does, it should help any rookie defender they might select to become that much better.

It is understood that many may not agree with this player being picked at 19. An offensive tackle with this pick is probably the most mocked to Washington at this point. Christian Darrisaw from Virginia Tech will most likely be that pick if still on the board. For purposes of this mock, Darrisaw has already been selected so he is unavailable.

The hulking linebacker from Tulsa seems like a Ron Rivera type of guy. He has shown immense toughness, an ability to thrive in a setting that doesn’t typically produce NFL talent, and has position versatility because of his size and athleticism. Per NFL.com Analyst Chad Reuter, Collins has “terrific second effort as a tackler,” and “range to make plays all over the field.”

All over social media, the selection of Collins is a mixed one. Twitter scouts are not happy but can see the upside of the pick.
