Round 7, Picks 243 and 245

We’re on the home stretch! I’m going to package the Washington Football Team’s seventh-round picks together, because they’re basically back-to-back. Let’s take a look at what’s left.

  • Arkansas QB Feleipe Franks
  • Texas QB Sam Ehlinger
  • Notre Dame QB Ian Book
  • Cincinnati RB Gerrid Doaks
  • UAB RB Spencer Brown
  • Texas WR Brennan Eagles
  • Kent State WR Isaiah McKoy
  • Stanford WR Simi Fehoko
  • Texas Tech WR T.J. Vasher
  • Boise State TE John Bates
  • Virginia Tech TE Tony Poljan
  • Nebraska OT Brenden Jaimes
  • Buffalo OT Kayode Awosika
  • Texas A&M Carson Green
  • Charleston DT Kenneth Randall
  • Louisiana Tech DT Milton Williams
  • Ohio State EDGE Jonathon Cooper
  • Northwestern EDGE Earnest Brown IV
  • Auburn LB K.J. Britt
  • Northwestern LB Paddy Fisher
  • Michigan State LB Antjuan Simmons
  • Appalachian State CB Shemar Jean-Charles
  • Appalachian State CB Shaun Jolly
  • Oregon State CB Nahshon Wright
  • Tennessee CB Bryce Thompson
  • UCF CB Tay Gowan
  • Indiana S Jamar Johnson
  • Virginia S D’Angelo Amos

At this point, there’s a lot of flexibility. And don’t hate on picking quarterbacks this late. Especially for the Washington Football Team, picking a quarterback prospect in Round 7 is a cost-conscious move. This quarterback could become a long-term backup with some development, and they’re under contract for four years while the position undergoes change. And guess what you lose if it doesn’t work out? A seventh-round pick. So there’s not much downside.

By that same virtue, I’m going to select Sam Ehlinger with my first seventh-round pick. Granted, there’s not a ton of physical upside here. He’s a good athlete who’s an absolute gamer in clutch situations. The questions stem around his ability as a passer. Overall, I think, in a similar vein to Taylor Heinicke, his competitive fire is something that would be valuable in a pinch, if he did ever have to come in.

And with the final pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, my specific version of the Washington Football Team will select Ohio State edge rusher Jonathon Cooper. Cooper played extremely well at the Senior Bowl, and his workmanlike, quick-twitch style could fit well in Washington’s stable of edge rushers. He’ll also be reunited with former teammate Chase Young.

My Picks: Texas QB Sam Ehlinger and Ohio State EDGE Jonathon Cooper

And with that, our first stream-of-consciousness mock draft is concluded. Here’s my haul!

  • Tulsa LB Zaven Collins
  • Purdue WR Rondale Moore
  • Miami TE Brevin Jordan
  • Oklahoma OT Adrian Ealy
  • Syracuse DB Trill Williams
  • Pittsburgh S Paris Ford
  • Texas QB Sam Ehlinger
  • Ohio State EDGE Jonathon Cooper
