Washington Football Team upper-tier free-agent options

Lavonte David, Buccaneers

Lavonte David is one of the best overall linebackers in the NFL today, but at age 31, he is on the “wrong” side of 30 and that rarely works for a player outside of the quarterback position.

David can probably play at a high level for the next two or three years, but he is probably looking for a contract of at least four years.  That could be too risky for the Washington Football Team to consider.

Matt Milano, Bills

Matt Milano is decent in the rushing defense, but he really excels in coverage and is one of the best in the business.  Running backs and tight ends on passing downs have a difficult time when Milano is patrolling the middle.

Milano will occasionally be tasked with covering the slot receiver, especially on shorter routes and slants.  Are you looking for a coverage specialist at inside linebacker?  If so, Milano is your guy.

Jayon Brown, Titans

Jayon Brown is solid in all aspects of the inside linebacker role.  He is good in the rushing defense and superb in pass coverage.  Brown is a bit undersized, but his talent is undeniable.  His coverage skills are similar to Milano, but containment of running backs and scrambling quarterbacks gives Brown a slight edge.

Either player will be an affordable option and would be a solid addition to the Washington Football Team.

Prediction:  Washington signs Jayon Brown to a five year, $52M contract with $24M guaranteed and a $19M signing bonus.
